Comments: The Ardennes is a fairly sparsely populated area covered with dense forests and old mountains. Because of its strategic location the area has been a battleground for European wars for centuries. In modern times 3 major battles are memorable: the Battle of the Ardennes in WW I (August 21-23, 1914); Battle of France during WW II (launched by the Germans on May 10, 1940); and the Battle of the Bulge (a major German offensive Dec. 16, 1944 - Jan. 25, 1945).
