This early (1876) and rare stone lithograph by the “Father” of the poster depicts DELMONICO, THE BLACK TAMER, who was appearing every night at the FANTAISIES-OLLER MUSIC HALL. This year (1876) saw the inauguration of Joseph Oller’s entry into the entertainment business. He subsequently opened several auditoriums and music halls featuring variety acts. He is best remembered as the creator of the famous MOULIN ROUGE which he opened in 1889.
The act featured in this poster seems to be a strange choice for a music hall.
The tax stamp near the top left appears to authorize this poster as a small poster with a posting charge of “10 centemes.”
