These posters were commissioned by NEMS Enterprises, the Beatles company formed by their manager, Brian Epstein. The photographs from which these posters were printed were taken by Richard Avedon in August of 1967 in London. They first appeared in the January 9, 1968, issue of LOOK magazine. Avedon was America’s leading fashion and celebrity portrait photographer in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
In addition to this set, which was printed and distributed by LOOK magazine in 1967, NEMS awarded distribution rights in England to the DAILY EXPRESS newspaper and in Germany for European distribution to STERN magazine. The British and European printings are of a somewhat smaller size: approximately 27 x 19 inches, and seem to be more readily available than the American printing by LOOK magazine.
Many knock-off reproductions of these posters are floating around the market. But, offered here are the 1967 first American printings which are seldom found today in decent condition. A complete set is rare. The LOOK magazine set is the most desirable and the most difficult to find.
