This is the earlier (pre-jet) version of Klein’s iconic image. This mid-century design features one of the Pope’s Swiss Guards in full ceremonial dress. The uniform (blue – yellow – red – orange striped pantaloons with crimson-plumed helmet) reflects the traditional colors of the Medici family and dates back to the Renaissance. The Guard was founded in 1506 by Pope Julius II.
In this poster the Coliseum and the Vatican seem to take a back seat in the eyes of the potential visitor to the Guard member himself.
